But we're wondering if we can get both Family Tree Maker and Mac Family Tree, and use FTM for the main work while using MFT for the pretty charts and graphical representations of the data.

I think my mum plans to do a lot with the software (i.e., make an extensive tree), so perhaps Family Tree Maker is the best. My question is, how important is the ability to sync to sites like Ancestry? My mum has done a lot of research already using Ancestry, so she would like whatever software she gets to have the ability to connect to that site and download the information there for each ancestor to her software, but what does "syncing" really do for you in addition to the "connecting" ability? Also, is it true that most genealogy software programs have the ability to connect to Ancestry and other sites and download existing info, while only some have the ability to sync? Much of the info out there seems to indicate that the syncing capabilities of Family Tree Maker and its extensive functionality make it the best option, but the look and feel (of the software itself and the data visualization options) does seem to be quite dated compared to MacFamilyTree. MacFamilyTree 9 and Family Tree Maker 2019 seem like the most recommended options for Macs. I'm helping my mother choose genealogy software for her Mac computer.
